How-To Read Your Food Labels: Understanding Added Sugars

Always Save® utilizes Facts up Front® to help deliver at-a-glance product information. Facts Up Front is a voluntary labeling initiative that summarizes important nutrition information from the Nutrition Facts Panel in a simple and easy-to-use format on the front of food and beverage packages. The nutrient facts are straight from the Nutrition Facts Panel that you see on the side or back of food packages.

How to read your food label by using Facts up Front product information.

Brands are required to provide this product information by the Food and Drug Administration, the federal agency that regulates food and beverage products. Facts Up Front is designed to help consumers compare products and make more informed choices when it comes to several key nutrient facts. Soon, you will see Added Sugars included on Always Save Facts Up Front.

The FDA recently updated the Nutrition Facts Label to include added sugars. Added sugars can be part of a healthy dietary pattern; however, consuming too much added sugars can make it difficult to meet nutrient needs while staying within recommended calorie limits. With added sugars on the label, consumers can be more aware of the quantity of added sugars in foods. Added sugars include sugars that are added during the processing of foods (such as sucrose or dextrose), foods packaged as sweeteners (such as table sugar), sugars from syrups and honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. They do not include naturally occurring sugars that are found in milk, fruits, and vegetables. The Daily Value for added sugars is 50 grams per day based on a 2,000-calorie daily diet.  For most Americans, the main sources of added sugars are sugar-sweetened beverages, baked goods, desserts, and sweets.
